Neurodiversity-affirming care

At TAY’D, Alannah applies a neurodiversity-affirming approach in our practice, which embraces the diversity of neurological differences between all human brains. Neurodiversity-affirming care is inspired by the concept of diversity.

Neurodiversity is an umbrella term that describes many different neurotypes, including:

  • Autism (ASD)

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Learning differences (Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia)

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Tourette’s and Other Tic Conditions

  • Other biologically based differences (Bipolar and Schizophrenia)

  • Acquired Neurodivergences (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Alannah doesn’t pathologise neurodivergent traits as flaws, defects or disorders. Alannah acknowledges that Neurodivergent individuals have their own culture, social and communication norms. Alannah promotes respect, equity, acceptance, understanding and support for neurodivergent individuals. Alannah embraces neurodiversity and aims to increase environmental and societal accommodations related to nutrition for her clients.

Trauma-informed care

Simple line drawing of a wine glass filled with some liquid, outlined in purple.

At TAY’D, Alannah applies a trauma-informed approach in every consultation because trauma often affects the way people seek support. Trauma-informed care recognises the ongoing effects of past or current trauma and that this can deeply shape how someone experiences their body, food, and healthcare.

Alannah uses trauma-informed care because trauma is not always visible, but it often is in the room. Alannah applies the core principles of trauma-informed care: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment. Alannah makes all attempts to minimise the risks of re-traumatisation, clinician-associated traumatisation and promotes healing.

As a Dietitian Brisbane, Alannah acknowledges that trauma can manifest itself in many ways, including fearing food, fearing regular digestive processes, fearing pain, hypervigilance about symptoms, anxiety around medical settings and attending consultations, and feeling unsafe in your body. Alannah understands that trauma can affect both the “what” of nutrition (the foods you eat) and the “how” (your capacity to shop, cook, eat, or digest).

Alannah works gently and at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Trauma-informed care is grounded in respect, equity, informed consent, safety and empowerment. At Thrive As You, this means you’re not just another case file or symptom list. You’re a whole person who deserves physical and emotional safety throughout your nutrition journey.

  • In Australia, all dietitians are considered nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians.

Nutritionists who do not hold a dietetics qualification cannot call themselves a “dietitian”. Nutritionists are not regulated in Australia, meaning anyone can practise as a Nutritionist regardless of qualification.

Dietitians and Accredited Practising Dietitians are the best experts to seek nutrition advice from they undergo extra training at university in areas such as medical nutrition therapy, counselling, food service, research, food science and systems, and evidence-based practice.

  • At TAY’D, we’re committed to providing a high quality services to all clients. Refer to our about us section detailing our qualifications. Our Dietitian also regularly completes additional training to provide you the most evidenced-based and up-to-date recommendations.

Given this, it is not viable to provide this level of care and bulk bill clients. The rebates from Medicare or Australian Private Health Funds, are not sufficient. Therefore, there will be out-of-pocket costs for consultations.

To see the rebates you might be eligible for, see ‘can I get private health or Medicare rebates on services?’
